Frequently Asked Questions

What is the artificial rock in your projects made from?

We exclusively use RicoRock® artificial rock which is made from a high-tech concrete that has been molded from natural rock formations and reinforced with fiber for premium strength and durability.

Is natural stone or cast concrete better for my project?

Cast concrete is often a better choice for pool waterfalls or grotto projects than natural stone because it offers greater design flexibility, durability, and ease of maintenance. Unlike natural stone, cast concrete can be molded to create custom shapes and features, and it’s less likely to crack or shift over time. Additionally, cast concrete is lighter and easier to install, reducing labor costs and installation time. It also requires less upkeep, making it a more cost-effective and long-lasting solution for pool features.

What about plastic and/or resin alternatives, don’t those last forever?

Plastic and resin alternatives may last indefinitely in a landfill, but our service products are designed to last for the lifetime of the pool or pond they are built for—often decades. The surface concrete is much harder than regular concrete, so it ages slowly over time, resisting natural weathering despite normal use.

What is used to color the artificial rock?

We exclusively use RicoRock® proprietary products, which are created with off-white cement, giving them a neutral base color. To add further color, we use RicoRock® acrylic stains that bond well to these concrete surfaces and other materials. When applied correctly, these stains will not peel or flake. During the curing process that occurs in the first two weeks, the color absorbs into the concrete and may soften slightly. While the colors remain stable after this initial period, they will naturally wane somewhat over time.

As concrete ages, it develops a unique patina, and many clients actually prefer the weathered, sunwashed look that can develop over the years. However, if no sealers have been applied, it's easy to refresh the color with an application of RicoRock® stain.

Can sealers preserve the surface concrete and color?

While sealers may seem like a way to preserve color and surface concrete, they are generally not a practical solution. Many sealers can make the surface slippery, turn milky over time, and wear off within a few years. They’re also costly compared to simply reapplying color when needed. We recommend avoiding sealers altogether.

How can I minimize calcium deposits from forming?

To minimize calcium deposits, Deck-O-Shield is recommended for projects with exposed mortar, hand textures, or pools with salt or hard water issues. If the water quality is good and the installation is straightforward, a sealer may not be necessary.
