Location: Ohio River, 1988

Builder: Rock Formations Inc, Mid-America Pools

Method: Welded to Steel Frames

One of our most challenging builds, this project featured a large cave structure and cascading waterfalls constructed by Rock Formations Inc. (parent company to RicoRock and Rock Formations Texas) on a structural steel frame using castings and hand-textured concrete. Without footings, the entire structure was built on a repurposed oil barge to adapt to the rise and fall of the Ohio River.

Mid-America Pools installed a pool on the barge, creating a recreational area alongside a floating restaurant, both set against the Cincinnati skyline. Accessible by gangplank or boat, the site operated successfully for over 20 years before being sold downriver. A unique feature emerged—the waterfall subtly swayed with the barge as passing ships caused gentle waves, adding to the barge’s distinctive charm.
